P4 Stockholm covers south Stockholm from Södertörn University

Since September last year, Swedish Radio station SR P4 Stockholm has had a local editorial team based at Södertörn University. The initiative is part of the station’s comprehensive local news coverage in the region. It also creates opportunities for educational co-operation with journalism training at the university.

“We had a P4 reporter share tips and advice with students on the journalism course for academics, which the students really appreciated,” says Carl-Oscar Alsén, a tutor in radio broadcasting at Södertörns University.

He now hopes that the seminar can herald deeper co-operation between Södertörns University and Swedish Radio, he says.
“Perhaps we can create more workshops or similar activities. We haven’t sat down and discussed this as yet, but we hope to do so,” says Alsén.

P4 reporter Johanna Sjöqvist Harland, who gave the seminar, graduated from Södertörn University herself and believes the course gave her career an excellent grounding.
“It was a fun way of sharing my knowledge with students. One of the things I went into were the different positions on an editorial team such as reporter, news person, producer and presenter,” she says.

P4 Stockholm launched its local editorial initiative in 2015 with, among other things, having a reporter based in Kista, (north of Stockholm). Since autumn 2019, reporters have been based in Flemingsberg, Husby and Södertälje.

University places increased in record time

KTH is one of the universities set to receive government support in the wake of the corona crisis. Around an additional 700 places in foundation technology courses at KTH Royal Institute of Technology will make it easier for more people to retrain. Resources will also be allocated to establish more permanent course places.
