Flemingsberg in Transformation: ShiftSweden enables the transition to attractive and accessible living environments for all

Impact innovation is Sweden’s innovation initiative for the 2030s. Last week, the first five programs that have been granted funding for the next 10 years were presented, and we are pleased that “ShiftSweden” is one of these programs. In 2023, the Flemingsberg Science Foundation initiated discussions with IQ Samhällsbyggnad, which works to make Sweden a leader in sustainable urban development. As a result, in the fall we signed a letter of intent to be included in the “ShiftSweden” application, which has now been granted funding.

The development of Flemingsberg as a new regional city center in Stockholm includes a number of economic, social and environmental societal challenges in an urban environment. These challenges should provide a fertile ground for Flemingsberg to develop into a test bed for urban societal challenges as it is in unique proximity to five universities with completely different specializations as well as other public actors such as hospitals and municipalities. In other words, Flemingsberg is an environment where companies, academia, municipalities, the region and other stakeholders can collaborate on the development, testing and introduction of new products, services, processes or organizational solutions in selected areas.

We therefore welcome this program and the more than 100 companies and organizations that have endorsed the program idea and the mission of transforming Sweden, fossil-free and resource-conscious, into attractive and accessible living environments for all. Flemingsberg is the ideal place for the program’s mission labs in a real environment and, with its unique multi-university campus, can also be a platform for joint knowledge building.
