Life Science Cluster Flemingsberg – ERDF Project for growth in Life Science
Flemingsberg is taking a major step toward establishing itself as a key player in Life Science with the launch of the project “Life Science Cluster Flemingsberg.” The project has been granted funding from the European Regional Development Fund and aims to boost the growth and establishment of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the life science sector in the Stockholm region. The total project budget is €10.8 million for the years 2025–2027.
The Stockholm region has significant potential in life science, largely thanks to strong connections between business and academia. The region acts as an essential driver of innovation and growth in Sweden’s life science sector, where SMEs play a central role. To further strengthen this position, the project aims to support the growth and establishment of SMEs in the Stockholm region’s life science sector. By creating attractive networks, improving access to research infrastructure, and promoting sustainable collaboration, the project will contribute to the long-term development of the industry.
Growth and Innovation
Running from February 2025 to 2027, the project aims to enhance growth and innovation within the Stockholm region’s life science sector. The initiatives include creating networking groups, organizing seminars and events, matching companies’ needs for research infrastructure with facilities in Flemingsberg, and collaborating with municipalities and regions on strategies that facilitate SMEs and new business establishments. Additionally, the project will establish platforms for collaboration between companies within the sustainability domain, including circularity and shared resource utilization.
Leadership and Partners
The initiative is led by the Flemingsberg Science Foundation in collaboration with co-funders Huddinge Municipality, Botkyrka Municipality, Region Stockholm, and Hemsö, along with close partners Karolinska Institutet and Region Stockholm’s Life Science Office. With a shared vision and coordinated efforts, the project aims to make Flemingsberg one of Europe’s most attractive destinations for Life Science.
In summary, the project connects the strong resources within the Stockholm region’s life science sector with concrete actions to strengthen innovation and growth. Through the planned initiatives, the project lays the foundation for Flemingsberg to become a leading international cluster. This means new opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, strengthening the region’s competitiveness, and helping position Sweden as a global player in life science. The result will be a sustainable and innovative environment that creates long-term benefits for businesses, research, and society.

A letter of intent has been signed between the Karolinska ATMP Center and the ATMP Center Uppsala to deepen collaboration in the field of advanced therapies (ATMP). The initiative was celebrated with a joint kick-off at the end of October, where hopes for new research breakthroughs and benefits for patients were in focus.

With a background as a researcher at Karolinska Institutet and experience from academia, industry, and networking, Angela Hoyer, the new Networks and Event Manager at the Flemingsberg Science Foundation, is passionate about developing the life science sector. In her new role, Angela looks forward to creating meeting places where collaborations can grow, while also contributing to Flemingsberg’s continued development as a strong international hub for research and innovation.
A national resource for tomorrow’s treatments – Karolinska ATMP Center is now inaugurated
With a clear message of hope for the future and a powerful spirit of collaboration, the Karolinska ATMP Center in Flemingsberg was inaugurated at the end of August. The center is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital and will serve as a national resource for the production of advanced therapies (ATMPs), where research, clinical trials, and treatments work seamlessly together to deliver groundbreaking therapies to patients.
Meetings That Shape the Future: Flemingsberg Science at Almedalen
In June this year, the foundation took part in the annual Almedalen Week, the world’s largest democratic meeting place for everyone who wants to join the discussions on current societal issues. This year, we had a special focus on Life Science, an area and cluster that has long been a natural part of Flemingsberg, and which is now growing stronger than ever.
