10.30 – Evaluating Traction Forces and Fetal Brain Deformation in Vacuum-Assisted Delivery
Vacuum-assisted delivery (VAD) facilitates complicated vaginal deliveries by applying traction to the fetal head. High traction forces may contribute to the increased risk of neonatal morbidity associated with VAD, but the underlying injury mechanisms remain poorly understood, partly due to the lack of robust experimental and computational models of fetal head biomechanics. Our project aims to develop a combined experimental and computational framework to investigate the impact of traction forces on fetal brain deformation during VAD.
Speaker: Estelle Pitti, PhD Candidate at KTH Royal Institute of Technology
10.50 – Electroosmosis-based Therapy for Cerebral Edema
This talk presents how electroosmosis, a classical physics phenomenon, can be applied to treat brain edema by inducing controlled fluid movement inside the brain. Using computational modeling and preclinical studies, we show that gentle electric fields can effectively reduce edema and open new possibilities for regulating brain fluid flow in neurological diseases.
Speaker: Xiaogai Li, Associate Professor, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
11.10 – Accurate K⁺ Measurement from Dried Plasma Using the InstaSep Blood Collection Device
InstaSep is a finger-prick blood collection device that enables instant separation of whole blood into plasma and cellular fractions, which are subsequently dried on paper. This format allows simple, low-cost sampling, transport, and storage for distributed blood analysis while supporting robust measurements of proteins and nucleic acids. In this study, we demonstrate accurate potassium (K⁺) measurements comparable to venous samples and show that membrane separation must occur at a maximum of 7 minutes after blood application to prevent hemolysis and ensure analytical precision.
Speaker: Frida Ekholm, Vice President R&D at SampleFacts, Associate Professor, PhD
11.30 – Realheart TAH - the world's first 4-chamber total artificial heart
Realheart’s CEO, Ina Laura Perkins, shares how the Swedish innovation Realheart® TAH — a total artificial heart — aims to provide patients with severe heart failure both longer lives and improved quality of life. Discover the technology behind Realheart’s groundbreaking artificial heart — an innovation designed to mimic the body’s natural heart and blood flow, with the potential to transform the future of cardiac care and enable a high quality of life.
